Marine Journalism Award for Yachting Magazine Feature

I was thrilled today to be named among the winners in the 2011 writing competition held by Boating Writers International.

My article “Dream Big,” from the October issue of Yachting magazine, earned an honorable mention in the megayachts category. It’s a feature about the 138-foot Holland Jachtbouw motoryacht Calliope, which I was onboard for an interview and tour with the captain during spring 2011 in Italy.

This was a challenging article to write because the yacht had already been featured in several other magazines. My goal was to find a new angle that would keep readers interested. Instead of writing about general construction and layout, I instead focused on the business aspects of running Calliope as a charter yacht. She takes 10 guests at a weekly base rate of $160,000.

You can learn more about Calliope at my website CharterWave or through her listing for charter with Camper and Nicholsons International.
